Gordon Biersch

HISTORY...

It all started with the dream of two passionate guys named Dan Gordon and Dean Biersch. This dream of exceptional beer and delicious food became a reality on July 6, 1988 when the first Gordon Biersch opened in Palo Alto, California. Acquired by Big River Brewing Company in 1999, Gordon Biersch now has 27 locations in 17 states and Washington D.C. The Gordon Biersch heritage of superior beer, great food and good times are now served up fresh daily in locations stretching coast to coast and across the Pacific to Honolulu.

BREWING SYSTEM...

Separating the bar and restaurant area from a large, private party room, is the floor to ceiling, glass enclosed brewing space. Housed here is a stainless steel 35 HL (25 BBL) Washsmann Brewhouse, and a 6M Velo dosing filter. When ready, the beer is pumped over to an adjacent space that houses 8 JV Northwest 50 BBBL fermenters and 4 JV Northwest 50 BBL serving tanks.

This long tank room has an exterior glass wall as an architectural feature. 50 to 60 kegs are also usually stacked here, which adds to the memorable view of the building from the street. On the interior, the big tanks line a wall in one of the raised dining areas. The system has an operating capacity of 4000 BBL for lagers, and 6000 BBL for ales.

THE BREWERS...

Brewmaster:  Richard Lovelady earned a BS in Resource Economics from the University of California, Berkely in 1990. Next was an MBA in International Business from the European University in Antwerp, Belgium in 1992. After many great beers, he returned to the USA to work with his twin brother in the restaurant field, and began home brewing. After a few years he enrolled and graduate from the Brewers Training Program at UC Davis, California.

Next was a 6 month apprenticeship at Barley & Hops Brewing in San Fransisco, California. The brothers planned to open their own brewpub, but at the time were unable to secure the financing. A job opportunity as a production brewer with Gordon Biersch in San Fransisco was accepted. As lady luck would have it, he was soon offered the head brewer position for the new Las Vegas location in 1997.

Assistant Brewmaster: Jeffrey “Bubba” Amas
has worked at Gordon Biersch since 2003 while also attending UNLV, where he graduated in 2007 from the business management program. Because of his interests in beer and brewing, he was tapped on the shoulder to consider an apprenticeship program to become an assistant brewmaster for the company. After a year of rigorous study and practice, he moved up to the full time position. Buba can also be found helping out around the restaurant, and running the tapping parties and special events over at the Boca Park location. He also helps brew for the Sin City Brewing Company.

ATMOSPHERE...

Gordon Biersch Las Vegas is located in the city's "Restaurant Row", minutes from the famed Strip and the Las Vegas Convention Center. The airy, bright building is reminiscent of a converted San Francisco warehouse. Known as one of the area's premier locals' destinations, Gordon Biersch Las Vegas features a Beer Garden, two private dining rooms for group entertaining for locals and traveling conventioneers, and convenient on-site parking.

BEERS ON TAP...

Golden Export: A golden colored , moderately hopped lager with a crisp dry finish. Modeled after the famous northern German export style lagers, this is the beer you find in most German beer halls all year round. (5.25% ABV / 17 IBU's)

Czech Pilsner: A crisp, golden, highly hopped lager. This beer was first brewed in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia in 1842 using a sample of special yeast smuggled from Germany by a Czech  monk. Until this time all beers were dark and cloudy: Pilsner beer was the first beer brewed clear and golden. (5.75%
ABV / 38 IBU's)

Schwarzbier: Schwarz means “black” in German and is a dark lager, moderately hopped with a dry-roasted finish. Often refered to as the “Guiness” of lagers, Schwarzbier is light bodied and surprisingly easy to drink. (5% ABV / 23 IBU's)

Hefeweizen: Brewerd in the original Bavarian style, the flavor has hints of clove, bubble gum and banana. True to the name and style it is unfiltered with the yeast still present. The body is crisp and effervescent. Brewed with 55% malted wheat and 45% malted barley, our Hefeweizen is naturally carbonated as are all Gordon Biersch Beers. (5.4% ABV / 12 IBU's)

Märzen: Our most popular beer is a smooth, mildly sweet, auburn colored lager. Originating in Bavaria, it was brewed in March ("Märzen" in German) and stored in caves to be enjoyed during warmer weather. At the end of September, any full barrels of Marzen remaining were consumed during the two week celebration which became known as Oktoberfest. (5.75%
ABV / 18 IBU's)

SEASONAL BEERS...

Brewer’s Select:  A rotating seasonal selection by our brewmaster, typically a different German style beer brewed every year. Available February through March.

Winter Bock: In the 11th century, Bavarian monks sustained themselves during winter fasts with beers made from strong, dark flavored malts. These creamy bocks ensured that the monks would fast frequently.
Available November through January. (7.5% ABV / 22 IBU's)

Maibock: An unfiltered auburn colored strong bock beer, moderately hopped with a slightly sweet malty finish. First brewed in the northern German town of Einbeck to celebrate the coming of spring. In Las Vegas it celebrates that summer is not yet here. Available April through June. (7.5% ABV / 22 IBU's)

Sommergold: A Kolsch style German ale, this golden colored moderately hopped ale has a spicy, crisp finish that is perfect for the hot summer months. Available June through August. (5% ABV / 23 IBU's)

FestBier: Celebrating fall and the flavor profile of beers served at the modern-day Oktoberfest emphasizing rich, malty undertones with a moderately hoppy finish. The maltiness is created via the combination of dark-roasted, Munich-style malt and Pilsner malt. The hoppy aroma is achieved via the imported Hallertau aroma hops. Available September through November. (6.0% ABV / 18 IBU's)
